Yet the EU can withstand a change of direction, as it has before. Its easy to contemptuously dismiss professional politicians, bureaucrats and assorted functionaries, but their idea it was - not the peoples - to bind Germany and France so closely that Europes wars horrors became history. It was Schumann, Churchill and the rest who ensured that today the two countries have no border and a common currency. Thanks also go to Mitterrand, Kohl and Delors: all politicians; all flawed; yet all leaders. Sometimes what journalists too easily call elitism is vision or leadership. Consider Europe today to that of 1945, in every way, and there can only be acknowledgement of brilliance and unimaginable progress. Consider the Europe of 1990: if the Westies had been asked if they wanted to open their riches to the Osties, what would the answer have been ? A French referendum on Hungarian EU membership, anyone ? Its easy to mock, criticise and jump on bandwagons. Its harder to inspire and built. Yet inspire people, and build from what they want, is exactly what Europes leaders must do. We can talk of a leadership deficit, but it is for the likes of Merkel, Sarkozy and yes, even Gordon Brown (Europe ? Never heard of it) to sketch out a European future, and for Europes peoples to vote for it. If the EU is to survive and prosper, national governments can no longer take credit for all the worlds good and blame the EU for its bad (a familiar complaint from those bureaucrats, however as national governments control everything the EU does, never was a truer word spoken). Modern democracy is going through a spate of backlash and rebellion, and the EU is ripe as any prevailing wind to be hit. Notice must be taken, course must be changed, but progress must continue. History and a global view show clearly that blocs are the only way forward in the world today: China will not stop because Europe pauses. After the US, the EU is the worlds most successful grouping; and, by far, its most politically innovative and imitated. Breaking down internal protectionist borders to create a bigger market is the work of bringing jobs and economic prosperity to the efficient and productive, and wealth and schools to all, through taxation and incentivised redistribution. This is the work of all our legislators, national and european. Now is not the time for navel-gazing or defeatism, but the time for europe to press ahead, to speak up, to determine its future through action. Everyone is talking not just at the EU but about the EU, so there are less that could not care less and more that care more. Thats a good place to start to get more done.
