It was the beginning of the end of an era. I first sensed I was near by the clamour of the carnival: not a crowd as I expected, but a streaming procession, about 20 to 30 bodies wide, balloons and banners flowing, slobo out ! An even thicker crowd stood on the pavement watching them go by, leaning off windows or staring from shop windows. I tag on to the tail. Flirting between the straggling crowd and the peopled pavement, I am soon in the marchs midst. The best part of a brass band overtakes me, but its fanfare is no shock - the whole crowd is anarchic noise: chanting, whistles, hooters, horns and rattles made from cans. Ahead of me were some hard men: their rattles were made from heineken cans. Down, down, down to a bridge across the sava. People lined the entrance, smiling and applauding. As the demonstration was about a miles length they must have been clapping a hell of a long time. Easily manipulated the government branded the rally; manipulated professor read one mans badge. The long procession came to a stop around a large isolated window-clad building, topped with a jungle of aerials on top - the state tv and radio stations, I was told, under the total control of milosevics socialist party, run by his eldest daughter. Much of the country doesnt even know about the demos. Although there are so many people, and double when its better weather. Last week there were girls here in high heels, in the snow. These girls rave all night, wake at three and do nothing else. Even they are here. My narrator paused from talking to me to turn to the building, where he joined almost everyone else in bellowing loudly, it disturbs the transmissions. Thats the signal to the rest of the country. Crossing the bridge again, photographers are waiting for us. One student spectacularly burns a socialist poster. Meanwhile piles of free newspapers are being flung around the crowd. As we approach the socialists headquarters (more press lying in wait), the passing crowd fling the paper violently at the building, a spectacular stream lasting minutes. So this is democracy ? commented two girls, and then joined in the litterfest. The spectators line the route to the end, applauding the celebration, the smiles, the flags, the continuous deafening noise. The university of belgrade had been closed for 20 days, stopping learning to teach. Baron Frankal EFQR^@ A K N z | U X = ?
